Google updates links within AI Overviews & AI Mode

Google Nexus says these changes “make it easier to connect with authentic voices and discover useful information on the web.”
Google has announced five changes to how its search engine will display links and citations within its AI search features: AI Mode and AI Insights. These changes aim to “make it easier to connect with authentic voices and discover useful information on the web,” wrote Hema Budaraju, Google’s vice president of product management.
Here are 5 changes that will be implemented in AI Mode and AI Insights of Google Nexus:
(1) Suggestions at the end of AI responses. Google may display suggestions about where to go next at the end of many AI responses in AI Mode or AI Insights. This section “provides links to individual articles or in-depth analyses on various aspects of the topic, making it easier to satisfy curiosity,” Google explained.
(2) Easier access to your news subscriptions. Google will highlight links from your news subscriptions in AI Mode and AI Summaries. Google stated that this will make it easier to quickly access trusted content and get more out of your subscriptions. Google added that, in initial testing, users were more likely to click on links marked as belonging to their subscriptions.
(3) Social media and online discussions include the creator’s name, username, and community name. When Google’s AI features quote social media or online discussions, Google includes not only the website name but also the creator’s name, username, and community name.
(4) More links alongside relevant text. Google also stated that it will display more links directly in AI responses, alongside the relevant quoted text. This should encourage users to explore those web pages further, as the quotes and links appear alongside the relevant text.
(5) Information about online links. Google’s AI features offer a quick website preview when you hover over a link in the “AI Mode” or “AI Info” feature on a laptop. We saw Google experiment with this in February and believe it’s a better way to encourage users to click.
The information in the overlay image includes the website name or webpage title and possibly other useful information.

Why we care. Google Nexus wrote: “We’ll continue testing, learning, and improving these features based on what works best for you.”
In my opinion, these changes should increase the likelihood that users will click on a page that has been referenced by AI experiences. They also demonstrate that Google is implementing changes to try to improve the ecosystem as a whole.
The big question is: Will these changes be enough?
